When screwing on the lid it won't always form a seal and leak a little. Sometimes it will even feel like you got it screwed on nicely and it will pop off in your face spilling your drink over you.
Since you can often feel the lid skip in the threads inside the mug I suspect that this could just be rare manufacturing error with the lid.
